In June 2010, the Board voted to consolidate K- 6 students from Usborne Central PS and Exeter PS at the Exeter PS site in September 2012, while the Grade 7-8 students from both schools would begin attending the elementary section of South Huron District High School. On June 22, 2011 at the first meeting of the Bluewater-South Huron Transition Committee, the Usborne-Exeter Sub-committee met to discuss if a name change should be considered for the consolidated site.The consensus was that there should be a minor change, removing the word "public" from the school name and replacing it with the word "Elementary".

The Board approved amending the name of Exeter Public School to be Exeter Elementary School, effective September 1, 2012.
