Breakout Sessions
Breakout Workshop Sessions: (select 1st and 2nd choice)
A. Planned Exposure for Emergent Literacy, Jackie Van Lankveld
The emergent years of literacy are just that: emerging, yet there are tremendous opportunities to maximize the literacy experiences that children receive in a
childcare setting when exposure to literacy is planned and purposeful. In this workshop, you will hear and see some opportunities to increase your literacy interactions and also receive a developmental reference chart to help you with your “planned literacy exposure” for emergent literacy.
B. Beautiful Junk, Stacy Adams
This workshop will help educators “think out of the box”, look around at their own environments and see what could be useful in the classroom environment. The common saying, “One person’s junk is another ones’ treasure” will be evident in this workshop. Stacey is an Early Intervention and Early Childhood Vision Consultant with CNIB. She has worked in the ECE field for many years as an Early Childhood Educator, a Resource Consultant with Community Living, and most currently, a consultant with the Canadian National Institute for the Blind in the Early Years department.
Stacey comes with a variety experience and a unique talent for “making something out of nothing”.
C. Bringing Stories to Life – Drama and Storytelling, Crystal Brennan-Yeo
This workshop consists of demonstrating and sharing ways for adults to engage children in the art of storytelling through the use of the arts, specifically drama and music. Workshop participants will leave with a small booklet containing the activities and ideas that will be shared throughout the 90 minutes focusing on the following aspects below: Warm-up activities: Storytelling: Story Drama: Tableaux:
Sound Effects: Music: Role Play: Story Building: Facial Expressions: Vocal Expression: Character Creation: Narration: Puppets: Dance: Reflection: Mask Creation: Set Design: Creative Movement and Mime.
Crystal is a graduate of the Drama in Education Program at the University of Windsor, and of the University of Western Ontario, Education program. She has trained to be a clown, has fifteen years of dance experience, plays a number of musical instruments, and has facilitated numerous
workshops for all ages focusing on teaching literacy skills through the arts. Her hope is to inspire her students and fellow educators to fully understand the benefits of integrating art into education.
D. Wings of Discovery- Sand & Water, Mary Quinn
The word “science” can elicit anxiety in many educators. At this hands-on/mindson workshop, you will learn the importance of engaging young children with science activities, while also discovering how easily these activities can be integrated into sensory areas of play in the classroom. Mary is an Education Specialist with Let’s Talk Science and is one of the lead writers of the Wings of Discovery Early Years Program. She has worked in many ECE settings and has long experience developing and implementing sciencerelated programs for young children.
E. Outdoor Play: “No Climber, Now what will we do?” Monica Carruthers
In this workshop we will discuss the importance of outdoor play as it affects brain development. We will consider the importance of curriculum planning for outdoor play. Then we explore ways to naturalize playgrounds on a very low budget! Let’s think “outside the playground” for providing children with natural, creative spaces to play, explore and learn! Monica is a graduate of the Mohawk College ECE program, is certified by the AECEO, has a Resource Teacher Certificate and is registered with the College of ECE’s. She has worked in Day care, Co-operative Preschool, and has been a Resource Teacher.
