French Immersion - Stratford Central Secondary School
A few weeks ago, the Grade 9 French Immersion class from Stratford Central Secondary School welcomed a group of 18 young people from École secondaire Népisiguit, Bathurst, New Brunswick to participate in the second half of a 6 day exchange. The two groups were twinned under a project funded by the SEVEC Youth Exchanges Canada program. The program is aimed at youth groups between the ages of 12-17 from various provinces and territories across Canada. Since 1936, SEVEC has brought together more than 300,000 young Canadians through exchanges, visits, and forums. SEVEC (Society for Educational Visits and Exchanges in Canada) is partially funded by the Government of Canada through Exchanges Canada, and the Department of Canadian Heritage.
Some of our hosting activities included attending classes, seeing a performance of Peter Pan, taking day trips to Toronto and Niagara Falls, and spending an afternoon dragon boating, and playing soccer. I would like to thank community members who supported this student program: Jeff Orr for giving us a tour in the Orr Insurance fire truck, Ken Gene and friends for their guidance dragon boating, Gene’s Restaurant, Erica Croft of the Stratford Shakespeare Festival, “Eddie” Zeineddine of Pino’s Pizza, Sandy Wickenheiser of Tim Horton’s (downtown), Robert Koolen and Colleen Murray of Koolen’s Art Gallery, Dale Bast for his help at the Bingo fundraiser, and Brian and Brenda Steele. Finally, sincere thanks to my students for being great ambassadors of our city and school in December, and to our families for being wonderful hosts for part two here in Stratford.
