Little Falls Public School to Open October 12, 2010

Despite some early delays in the construction of Little Falls Public School in St. Marys, crews have made up time because of the exceptional weather of late.  As a result the Avon Maitland District School Board is pleased to announce that the new school will open for students on Tuesday, October 12, 2010, the day after Thanksgiving.

Superintendent of Business Janet Baird-Jackson was beaming with the news of the earlier opening saying, "What a better time to make the move and celebrate our new JK-6 elementary school than Thanksgiving."

Little Falls Public School, is located next to the new Pyramid Centre in St. Marys and will replace the aging Arthur Meighen Public School and St. Marys Central Public School which will officially close at the end of the current school year.  Special ceremonies are being planned for the two schools as part of the Annual St. Marys Homecoming celebrations July 1-4, 2010 .

As of the first day of school on September 7, 2010, the schools will be operating as 'Little Falls'  but with two campuses - St. Marys Central and Arthur Meighen, until the physical move at Thanksgiving. From a logistics perspective, much work has already been undertaken in moving to 'one school'  as of September.

Helen Brockman is the Principal of the new JK-6 school and staffing is being undertaken for Little Falls as one school with two campuses for the start of next year. The Board's Facilities department is developing a team to work through the detailed logistics of the physical move.  The town's grade 7-8 students will attend St. Marys D.C.V.I. come September in a dedicated section of the school to be named the "Arthur Meighen" wing.

Superintendent Baird-Jackson says, "This is a very exciting time for the students and staff in St. Marys and we are all looking forward to the launch of a wonderful new environmentally friendly school."
